There is something magical about watching a classic film beneath the open sky. Recently, I attended the Taliesin Open Air Cinema Swansea event with my friends Caroline and Dawn. Held in the Taliesin Arts Centre car park at Swansea University, the evening combined stunning coastal views, great company, and one of cinema’s most beloved classics.
A Stunning Setting at Swansea University
The setting could not have been more impressive. The outdoor screen was located in the Taliesin Arts Centre car park at Swansea University, with Swansea Bay visible in the distance. Meanwhile, the golden colours of the sunset created a warm glow across the horizon.
We gathered early and settled into our spots. Excitement filled the air as people arrived with blankets, chairs, and picnic baskets. Fortunately, the Welsh weather behaved itself. Although rain had threatened earlier in the day, the evening remained dry and pleasantly cool.
The university’s parkland surroundings added to the atmosphere. As daylight faded, the open-air venue transformed into the perfect setting for an evening of cinema beneath the stars.
Live Music Sets the Tone
Before the film began, talented Swansea University students entertained the audience with a live musical performance.
Their music created a welcoming atmosphere and added energy to the event. Furthermore, it provided the perfect soundtrack as the audience relaxed and enjoyed the surroundings. As a result, excitement continued to build ahead of the screening.
A Picnic with Friends
No outdoor cinema experience feels complete without good food and drink.
Our picnic included thin smoked salmon sandwiches with soft cheese and chives, accompanied by crisps and a glass of prosecco. Later, as the evening air cooled, we enjoyed cups of hot tea.
Meanwhile, we chatted, laughed, and admired the sunset. The combination of delicious food and great company made the experience even more enjoyable.
Star Wars Comes to Life
As darkness arrived, the main attraction finally began. The famous opening crawl of Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope appeared on the screen, while John Williams’ iconic score echoed across the venue.
Watching George Lucas’s 1977 masterpiece outdoors felt completely different from seeing it in a traditional cinema. Under the night sky, the adventures of Luke Skywalker, Princess Leia, Han Solo, and Darth Vader seemed even more epic.
Furthermore, the sounds of the evening blended beautifully with the film’s soundtrack. Therefore, the experience felt immersive from beginning to end.

The sunset, the live entertainment, the delicious picnic, and the timeless appeal of Star Wars came together perfectly. Most importantly, sharing the experience with Caroline and Dawn made it even more memorable.
