The Panedeni Band Atamanaa Tour brought an unforgettable evening of music to The Welfare in Ystradgynlais. On a warm summer evening, my friends Rachel, Clare, Stacey and I attended this unique performance, which blended Welsh and Arabic musical traditions into a captivating cultural experience.
Before heading to the concert, we enjoyed a meal at The Stables Bar & Kitchen. You can read my review here:
A Perfect Venue for Live Music
The Welfare sits at the heart of the Ystradgynlais community and regularly hosts arts, music and cultural events. Following the midweek heatwave, the venue’s cool interior provided a welcome escape from the summer temperatures.
As the audience gathered, there was a real sense of anticipation. The evening promised something different from a typical live music performance, offering a musical journey from Wales to the Middle East and beyond.

About Panedeni
The Panedeni Band Atamanaa Tour is built around the vision of Panedeni, a unique North Wales-based cross-cultural ensemble that brings together Eastern and Western folk traditions. Fronted by vocalist and composer Yasmine Latkowski, the group combines Arabic melodies with Welsh folk influences to create a distinctive and engaging musical experience.
The ensemble features an impressive blend of instruments, including the oud, violin, woodwinds, Welsh bagpipes and percussion. Their performances showcase how music can bridge cultures while celebrating the traditions of each.
The Meaning Behind the Name
The name Panedeni reflects the band’s ethos of friendship and cultural exchange. It combines the Welsh word paned, meaning a cup of tea, with Adeni tea from Yemen. Together, the two references symbolise people coming together, sharing experiences and building connections through conversation, music and community.
This sense of togetherness was evident throughout the evening at The Welfare. The performance felt less like a concert and more like a celebration of cultural understanding and shared stories.
Music Without Borders
Panedeni perform in multiple languages, including Arabic, Welsh and English. Their music ranges from energetic rhythms that inspire belly dancing to beautifully melodic pieces featuring Welsh border pipes and traditional folk influences.
Their debut EP, Atamanaa, expands on these multicultural themes. The collection highlights the band’s commitment to blending musical traditions while creating something entirely their own. Listening to the music live brought an added dimension, with each song introduced through stories and explanations that revealed the inspirations behind the compositions.

The Panedeni Band Atamanaa Tour Experience
The performance began with a rich blend of sounds that immediately captured the audience’s attention. Welsh vocals sat comfortably alongside Arabic vocals, while Egyptian percussion, ouds, woodwinds and Welsh pipes combined to create a unique musical landscape.
From the opening piece, the musicians demonstrated exceptional skill and passion. Every performance felt carefully crafted and deeply meaningful. The music flowed effortlessly between cultures, proving how traditions from different parts of the world can complement one another.
The atmosphere inside The Welfare was warm and welcoming. Audience members were fully engaged throughout the evening, enjoying both the music and the stories that accompanied it.
Stories Behind the Music
One of the most enjoyable aspects of the evening was hearing the stories behind the songs. The band took time to explain the origins of different musical traditions and how they influenced the compositions being performed.
These introductions added depth to the performance. They helped the audience appreciate not only the music itself but also the cultural heritage that inspired it.
As someone who has always appreciated the Welsh concept of hiraeth, I found these discussions particularly moving. I was fascinated by the similarities between emotional experiences found in different cultures and how these connections were expressed through music.
The explanations highlighted themes of belonging, longing, identity and home. These universal experiences resonated strongly with the audience and demonstrated the power of music to connect people across cultural boundaries.
Memories of Belly Dancing
The dancing throughout the evening reminded me of my time with Lotus Sisters Belly Dance in Swansea. I attended classes for around two years and thoroughly enjoyed the experience, even if my abilities never quite matched my enthusiasm.
When I mentioned this to my friends, they immediately suggested that I should join in. I quickly reminded them that there was probably a very good reason I had remained in the beginners’ class for the entire two years.
Thankfully, they settled for laughing rather than pushing me onto the dance floor. Still, one day you never know!
The lively rhythms and expressive movements brought back many happy memories and added another enjoyable dimension to the evening.

A Celebration of Culture and Community
The Panedeni Band Atamanaa Tour offered much more than an evening of entertainment. It celebrated cultural understanding, shared experiences and the power of music to connect people.
The audience remained engaged throughout the performance. The combination of storytelling, musicianship and cultural exploration created a memorable atmosphere that felt both educational and inspiring.
By the end of the evening, we all agreed that we had experienced something special. Good food, great company and outstanding music combined to create a wonderful night out in Ystradgynlais.
As we left The Welfare and stepped into the cooler evening air, there was a shared appreciation for what we had witnessed. Panedeni had successfully demonstrated how music can transcend borders, languages and traditions, bringing people together through a shared love of culture and creativity.
For anyone looking to experience live music that is both entertaining and thought-provoking, the Panedeni Band Atamanaa Tour is well worth seeking out.
