A Perfect Afternoon After Lunch
After enjoying a fantastic lunch at Pant-y-Gwydr Restaurant in Swansea, my friends Caroline, Andy, and I decided to make the most of the beautiful weather. Rather than heading straight home, we travelled to the coast for a walk between Limeslade Bay and Rotherslade Beach.
The sunshine was glorious, and the sea sparkled beneath clear blue skies. It felt like the perfect way to spend a summer afternoon on the Gower coast.
Setting Off from Limeslade Bay
Our walk began at Limeslade Bay, one of the quieter and more scenic bays near Mumbles. The route to Rotherslade Beach is approximately 1.1 miles each way and takes around 24 minutes in each direction.
Although the distance is not particularly long, some sections of the coastal path are quite hilly. After a large lunch, those hills felt even steeper than usual. Andy and Caroline set off at a brisk pace, and I quickly realised I would need to work harder to keep up.
Thankfully, Caroline slowed down occasionally, allowing me to catch my breath and enjoy the scenery. Those brief pauses gave me the perfect opportunity to admire the spectacular coastal views.
Stunning Coastal Scenery
The walk offered breathtaking views across Swansea Bay and the rugged Gower coastline. Every bend in the path revealed another impressive view of the sea, rocky cliffs, and surrounding countryside.
We stopped several times to take photographs and appreciate the scenery. The sunshine made the colours particularly vibrant, and the calm sea looked inviting throughout the afternoon.
It was one of those days when the Gower Peninsula truly shows why it is considered one of Wales’ most beautiful destinations.
Arriving at Rotherslade Beach
When we reached Rotherslade Beach, the area was buzzing with activity. The warm weather had attracted plenty of visitors, and the beach was full of people enjoying the sunshine.
Sunbathers relaxed on the sand while families paddled in the shallow water. Swimmers enjoyed the calm sea, and several people simply sat back and soaked up the atmosphere.
Not surprisingly, Andy could not resist joining them. Before long, he was in the water enjoying a refreshing swim while Caroline and I watched from the shore.
Andy’s Beetle Rescue
The return journey provided one of the day’s funniest moments.
While walking back along the path, Andy spotted a beetle and decided it needed rescuing. He carefully moved it away from the centre of the pathway to keep it safe.
However, Caroline and I were not entirely convinced his rescue mission was a success. In fact, we joked that the beetle may have been perfectly capable of looking after itself. Whether Andy helped or hindered remains open for debate, but it certainly gave us all a laugh.
A Surprise Wildlife Encounter
One of the highlights of the afternoon came shortly afterwards when we spotted a seal swimming in the sea below us. The seal appeared relaxed as it moved through the water and occasionally surfaced for air.
Watching wildlife in its natural environment is always special, and none of us expected such a wonderful surprise during our walk.
The sighting added another memorable moment to what was already proving to be a fantastic day.
Back to Limeslade Bay
After completing the return journey of approximately 2.2 miles, we eventually arrived back at Limeslade Bay. Despite the hills and the effort required after a large lunch, the walk had been thoroughly enjoyable.
The combination of beautiful weather, stunning scenery, plenty of laughter, and an unexpected wildlife encounter made it a memorable outing. Spending time with good friends while exploring the Welsh coastline is always time well spent.
Days like these remind me how fortunate we are to have such spectacular scenery right on our doorstep in Swansea and the Gower.
