An Evening Under the Stars: Taliesin Open Air Cinema in Swansea

There’s something truly magical about watching a classic film under the open sky, and my evening at the Taliesin Open Air Cinema in Swansea was no exception. Nestled just outside the Taliesin venue, beneath the enchanting treeline of Singleton Park, this experience was unforgettable. Sharing it with my friends Caroline and Dawn made it even more special.

The Setting

The scene was set beautifully—a large outdoor screen with Swansea Beach in the distance, the golden hues of the setting sun casting a warm glow on the horizon. It was the perfect backdrop for a timeless cinematic adventure: Star Wars (1977) Episode IV: A New Hope, written and directed by George Lucas. The anticipation was palpable as we settled in, our spirits high despite the unpredictable Welsh weather. Luckily, the rain held off, blessing us with a dry and crisp evening.

Pre-Film Entertainment

Before the film began, the atmosphere buzzed with excitement thanks to a wonderful musical performance by Swansea University students. Their talents added a vibrant energy to the evening, blending seamlessly with the natural ambiance of Singleton Park. Their music set the tone perfectly for a night of nostalgia and cinematic wonder.

The Picnic

No outdoor cinema experience is complete without a delicious picnic, and ours was nothing short of fabulous. We indulged in thin smoked salmon sandwiches with soft cheese and chives, paired with crisps and bubbles of prosecco. As the evening cooled, we warmed ourselves with hot tea, savoring every bite and sip as we chatted and laughed together.

The Film

As twilight deepened, the iconic opening crawl of Star Wars lit up the screen, and the familiar John Williams score filled the air. Watching the 1977 classic in such a unique setting was a surreal experience. The story of Luke Skywalker, Princess Leia, and Han Solo battling the Galactic Empire felt even more epic under the canopy of stars.

A Night to Remember

The combination of a spectacular setting, wonderful company, and a legendary film made this evening at the Taliesin Open Air Cinema truly unforgettable. The sight of the sun setting behind the screen, the sounds of nature blending with the iconic film score, and the shared joy of watching a classic with friends created a memory I’ll treasure forever.

If you ever get the chance to attend an event like this in Swansea, don’t hesitate. The charm of Singleton Park, the thoughtful programming by Taliesin, and the simple pleasure of good food and company make for an evening that’s out of this world—pun intended!
