A Beautiful Hot Day at Aberglasney Gardens

Arriving at Aberglasney Gardens

On Sunday 24th May 2026, I visited the beautiful Aberglasney Gardens in Llangathen, Carmarthenshire, on one of the hottest weekends of the year with temperatures reaching between 24° and 27°. It was the perfect weather for a relaxing day surrounded by nature, history, and wonderful company.

I met my friends Gareth and Rachel at the entrance around 10:45am before we slowly made our way through the gardens. Before starting our walk properly, we treated ourselves to a coffee, tea, and a traditional Welsh cake while planning the route around the grounds.

Exploring the Gardens and Woodland Walks

From the very beginning, Aberglasney Gardens felt peaceful and refreshing despite the heat. Because the pathways were shaded by trees and surrounded by streams, it became the perfect escape from the strong sunshine. While wandering through the woodland areas, we crossed charming little bridges and admired the spectacular scenery around us.

Across the gardens, colourful flowers, unusual plants, food-growing areas, and carefully designed displays immediately caught our attention. In addition, Gareth’s impressive knowledge of plants made the walk even more enjoyable. Thanks to his experience growing up and working on a farm, he knew so much about plants, animals, and the countryside. To be honest, Rachel and I joked that he could probably have told us anything about a plant and we would have believed him!

Discovering the History of Aberglasney

As we continued exploring, the fascinating history of Aberglasney captured our attention just as much as the beautiful gardens. During our visit to the small museum, we learned about the estate’s remarkable restoration and its rich past.

Interestingly, Aberglasney became famous through the BBC television series A Garden Lost in Time, which followed the restoration journey of the mansion and gardens. Today, the estate is recognised as one of Wales’ finest garden attractions. At the centre of the grounds stands the restored Elizabethan Cloister Garden, believed to be the only surviving example of its kind in the United Kingdom. Furthermore, visitors can enjoy more than 10 acres featuring over 20 different garden styles ranging from formal displays and woodland walks to exotic and modern planting schemes.

The Restored Mansion and Ninfarium

One of the highlights of the day was visiting the beautifully restored Grade II* listed mansion. The building has been home to many colourful characters over the last 500 years, including poets, bishops, artists, and landowners. After decades of neglect and vandalism, the mansion has been transformed into something truly stunning.

Inside the mansion, the spectacular Ninfarium immediately captured our attention. This award-winning indoor subtropical garden sits beneath a large glass roof, allowing exotic plants to grow amongst the restored ruins of the old building. The combination of history, architecture, and tropical greenery created an atmosphere unlike anywhere else we visited during the day.

Relaxing at the Tearooms

Later in the afternoon, we headed towards the tearooms and found a shaded table beneath the canopy overlooking the lake and surrounding gardens. Not only were the views across the water stunning, but the peaceful atmosphere also made it the perfect place to relax during the warm weather.

For lunch, I enjoyed a lovely Greek salad together with a refreshing elderflower presse, which was ideal on such a hot day. Afterwards, we spent quite some time relaxing with tea, cake, laughter, and small talk while chatting with visitors from different countries who were also enjoying the surroundings.

Inside, the tearooms felt cosy and welcoming. Meanwhile, the outdoor terrace offered a wonderful suntrap with beautiful views across the Pool Garden. As a result, it quickly became one of the highlights of our visit and the ideal spot to cool down and unwind.

A Perfect Day Out in Carmarthenshire

Before leaving, we spent more time wandering through the mansion and gardens, taking in the incredible restoration work and admiring the mixture of old architecture and botanical displays. The entire visit felt calm, welcoming, and inspiring from beginning to end.

Aberglasney Gardens truly offered the perfect combination of natural beauty, fascinating history, peaceful surroundings, and excellent food. On such a warm and sunny day, it was the ideal place to slow down, relax, and appreciate everything the Welsh countryside has to offer.

I would highly recommend a visit to anyone looking for a memorable day out in Carmarthenshire.
