The 4th Region Start-Up 2025 event took place on Wednesday, 5th March, at Swansea Arena on Oystermouth Road, Maritime Quarter, Bae Copr Bay, Swansea. The experience proved invaluable for aspiring entrepreneurs like myself. The event provided a platform to hear inspiring success stories, gain practical business start-up advice, and explore funding opportunities for future ventures.

The Exhibition: Business Support and Funding
One of my main objectives at the event was to browse the exhibition and gather information on business support and funding options. I was delighted to learn that Swansea Council offers start-up funding, a crucial boost for new businesses. However, I felt disappointed to find that my own local authority, Neath Port Talbot Council, currently prioritises funding for Port Talbot steelworkers. The good news is that they plan to launch a broader funding initiative soon. I remain hopeful that this will become available for a wider range of entrepreneurs in the region.
Start-Up Stories: Lessons from Successful Entrepreneurs
Ian Morgan – Managing Director of Morganstone Ltd

Ian Morgan’s story proved both insightful and inspiring. Learning about the origins of Morganstone Ltd, which once operated in Ammanford, and its significant role in Swansea’s regeneration projects fascinated me. He shared updates on the development of Princess Quarter Swansea, particularly the refurbishment of shops on the corner of Oxford Street and Union Street, which will include new flats above. Another exciting revelation detailed the future transformation of the McDonald’s building by Castle Square. The scale of these projects highlights the ongoing evolution of Swansea’s cityscape. Nigel Hunt – Founder of San Portablo

Nigel Hunt’s entrepreneurial journey stood out as particularly compelling. After losing his job at the Port Talbot steelworks during the 2016 steel crisis, he channelled his past experience in clothing and printing to establish the San Portablo brand. His story showcases resilience and creativity, turning negative perceptions of Port Talbot into an aspirational brand that has grown significantly over the past seven and a half years. From its humble beginnings in Nigel’s home in Aberafan to a dedicated store in Aberafan Shopping Centre, San Portablo exemplifies determination.
Nigel’s engaging storytelling and vibrant personality make it easy to see why he has formed partnerships with well-known figures, including Michael Locke—better known as Pancho from MTV’s Dirty Sanchez. This unique collaboration helped propel the brand into the spotlight. You can read more about San Portablo’s rise in this WalesOnline article.
Networking: A Connection with Nala’s Shop

One of the highlights of my day involved reconnecting with Angela, the entrepreneur behind Nala’s Shop, a South African food store and café in Swansea’s High Street Arcade. Her journey into business intrigued me so much that I followed up with a visit to her shop, which I documented in a separate piece. You can read all about my experience at Nala’s Shop on my sister website Satisfy Your Taste: Read the full story here.
Final Thoughts
The 4th Region Start-Up 2025 provided a day filled with learning, inspiration, and valuable connections. Discovering funding opportunities and listening to real-world success stories reinforced my determination to pursue my own business ambitions. As I continue exploring future possibilities, I remain hopeful for the launch of broader funding support in Neath Port Talbot and excited about the entrepreneurial journeys ahead.
