The charm of a train journey lies not only in its convenience but also in the scenic beauty it reveals along the way. Recently, we had the pleasure of taking a direct train from Swansea to Tenby, a picturesque coastal town in Pembrokeshire. Despite the absence of sunshine, the breezy day couldn’t dampen our spirits as we explored this stunning seaside resort.

Stepping off the train in Tenby, we were greeted by the sight of its iconic colourful houses, rugged cliffs, and inviting beaches. The coastal town exudes a timeless charm, perfect for a leisurely stroll or a spot of shopping in its quaint boutiques. Even with the wind whipping around us, the fresh sea air was invigorating, adding to the allure of the day.
No visit to Tenby is complete without sampling the local cuisine, and we found ourselves at the nautical-themed gastropub, the Hope & Anchor. Known for its hearty meat and seafood dishes, the pub didn’t disappoint. I opted for the Cajun Spiced Mackerel Fillet, served with new potatoes, a mixed salad, and a refreshing mint yogurt sauce. The dish was a flavourful treat, with the spice of the mackerel perfectly balanced by the creamy tang of the yogurt. It’s safe to say this was a meal to remember.

This delightful day out was made possible through an inspiring initiative led by Community Rail Officer, Eve Sherratt. Under her guidance, the program, in collaboration with Transport for Wales, organizes train journeys for community groups. The goal? To tackle loneliness, reduce isolation, and build confidence in using the railway. Participants enjoy a day trip by rail, complete with light refreshments, while learning how easy and accessible train travel can be.
Such initiatives highlight the power of community and the simple joys of exploring new places. If you’ve been inspired to embark on a similar adventure, you can learn more about Eve Sherratt’s work and other community rail projects in her blog, Eve’s Diary: Our Community Rail Officer’s Adventures Around Our Network here.
Next time you’re planning a day out, consider hopping on a train. Whether it’s sunshine or a sea breeze, destinations like Tenby promise memories that linger long after the journey ends.
